Modern Bohemian Home Office

Modern Bohemian Home Office
I was never in a place where “WFH” was used in such every day terms.  With the ongoing Covid19 mandatory work from home requirements, many of us are new to the concept of trying to separate our home life from our business life.
When we were working from an actual office, we were seemingly focused and productive.  Now, many of us find ourselves sitting with our computers at the kitchen or dining room table and we are struggling to stay centered.  We are entirely too close to the place where snacks are kept and our kids are running around distracting our every moment.  The struggle is real!  I found great relief from setting up a small home office in my guest room which allowed me to concentrate on what I need to get done without all of the interruptions (okay, so my kids are downstairs watching TV, but I’m getting in some quality work time away from them).
Here are my 3 essentials for quickly converting any working space into a bohemian oasis.
1.  Keep It Simple.
Sharing work space with another room often means that you have a small area to work with, and that’s okay!  Pick a corner of a room and start to plan it out.  I can't stress how much neutral walls change a space.  Look at my guest room when we bought our house (orange walls - eek!).

I have found that the bigger my desk, the bigger the mess, so small is perfectly okay in this situation.  You don’t want the desk to be the focal point of the room, so pick something that is functional, yet doesn’t take away from the space.  I picked up this desk from a local online marketplace and paired it with this chair from Overstock.com.  Easy.  Believe me when I say that my desk does not look like this at the end of the day.  It’s generally a mess, but I believe it’s important to spend time at the end of every work day to clean up, so that when I sit down the following day, I’m starting with a fresh space and mindset.

I use wall shelving to remove items that would otherwise live on my desk so that I have plenty of open space.  I like these DIYCartel shelving brackets (also available on Amazon) that add an industrial edge to my decor, while allowing me the space to add a plant, vase or artwork.  Shelving adds great dimension to otherwise flat wall decor and allows you to stack and layer different pieces.
Check out how easy these shelves were for me to install:
And let’s be honest, I don’t have guests that come to my home office desk and I don’t need a chair.  However, this black wicker chair from Wayfair (comes in a set of 2) just looks good and allows me to add a pop of color to the room with a few pillows or a cute throw blanket draped over the back.

Candles are frowned up in corporate work spaces, but when you’re working from home, you can fill your space with amazing scents!  Rain or shine, I always have a candle lit next to my desk.  I have been mixing scented soy candles with these amazing gold votives.  The gold really pops next to a green plant and makes my space look classy and elegant.  Some warm candles and some relaxing music and I am taken away from the chaos that is currently happening downstairs between my kids.

2.  Keep It Green.
Studies have shown that indoor plants boost mood, productivity, concentration and creativity.  Yes, please!  I mean, plants just make people happy!  I’m obsessed with succulents, snake plants and fiddle leaf figs.  They’re relatively hard to kill and they add such a little ray of light to any space.  If you aren’t currently a plant lover, and you don’t know what would work with the lighting in your space, you have to download the Plant Snap app!  You can take a picture of any plant and the app will give you the name and care features required for you to make a decision as to which ones will work best in your space.

3.  Keep It Personal.
Add decorations that speak to and inspire you.  A little macrame, some aztec art and wooden bead garlands and I’m totally in my element.   I love my kids dearly, but I don’t need their artwork cluttering up my office space.  I want to embrace a clean space where I can be creative and productive.
I love my orange peace sign from handmadenestco that adds a little color to my life (and reminds me of the original wall color in this room and how far I have come!)
I also suggest a bit of a mis-match when it comes to wood colors.  It doesn’t have to match!  It adds more character when you play around with different wood colors and textures.
